Dr. Carlos Santos appointed as Professor Applied Data Science & AI
BUas aims to be and remain a leading knowledge institute in Artificial Intelligence and Climate Education within its domains.
Artificial Intelligence is one of the two BUas transversal research themes, in addition to Sustainability Transitions. BUas aims to leverage AI as a transformative tool - while keeping ethical considerations at the forefront - to achieve meaningful outcomes. The aim is to ensure that research initiatives are academically rigorous, socially responsible, and globally relevant.

Carlos Santos has been appointed as the Professor of Applied Data Science & AI at BUas. In this role, he will be instrumental in shaping and implementing a cross-domain strategy that integrates research, education and business innovation. Carlos will advise the Executive Board and develop a strategic vision and research programme. As a visionary leader, he will challenge and be challenged by colleagues, students, and stakeholders.
Carlos will drive research in Applied Data Science and AI, fostering innovation and contributing to both academic and practical knowledge. He will align research with educational offerings and industry needs, ensuring students are well-prepared for the workforce. Additionally, he will promote ethical and sustainable AI practices within BUas and its community.
Dr. Carlos Santos has an MSc degree in Software Engineering and is Doctor in Philosophy with a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. Starting working in 1998, he became a teaching assistant in Portugal, and then gained experience working as a technical manager for the European Galileo GPS subsystem. Since 2009, Carlos has been working for BUas, as a senior lecturer and as coordinator for research and development projects at the BUas Academy for Games & Media.

Carlos: “I am very excited about my new position. It is a great honour and challenge, after having led the BUas Cradle research lab for many years, and supporting its growth to a dedicated and talented team of 25 members, tackling challenging problems.”
