Urban Intelligence
Despite increasing efforts to valorise knowledge, a significant gap between knowledge development and policy practice persists. Urban Intelligence addresses this gap by introducing cutting-edge knowledge, developing new policy concepts, and promoting the smart use of data.
What was the goal of this research?
The goal of the Urban Intelligence project was to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical policy implementation by integrating insights from transport engineering, urban planning, and urban design. This involved creating data-driven projects and tools to support policy development and enhance the integration of built environments with transportation systems.
What method was employed?
The research employed a multimodal and integrated approach. It included data-driven projects such as ‘Multimodal Brabant’ and ‘Measurement Weeks Breda’, which aimed to translate big data into actionable knowledge for policy development. Additionally, data analysis tools and dashboards for cycling, such as ‘CyclePRINT’, were developed. The project also introduced the Bicycle-Oriented Development (BOD) concept, which is being integrated into a broader development philosophy known as ‘Multimodal Urban Development’. This philosophy focuses on optimising multimodal networks, making location choices for new urban developments, and providing shared mobility through mobility hubs.
What findings did we uncover?
The project successfully demonstrated how integrating knowledge from various disciplines could bridge the gap between academic research and policy practice. The data-driven projects and tools developed, such as ‘CyclePRINT’, provided valuable insights for policy development. The Bicycle-Oriented Development (BOD) concept and the ‘Multimodal Urban Development’ philosophy offered new approaches to enhancing urban environments and transportation systems. These findings underline the importance of combining cutting-edge research with practical policy solutions to improve urban planning and transportation integration.
