Cross-Re-Tour

BUas is leading a three-year project aimed at promoting the adoption and replication of green and circular business practices among tourism SMEs. The project focuses on applying tools and solutions from other sectors to mainstream sustainable operations in the tourism industry.

What was the goal of this research?

The goal of this research is to facilitate the uptake and replication of innovative, green, and circular business practices within tourism SMEs. By leveraging tools and solutions from other sectors, the project aims to enhance sustainability and efficiency in tourism operations.

What method was employed?

The core activity of the project is a cross-domain open innovation programme. This programme will provide financial support of up to EUR 30,000 to 80 tourism SMEs. The initiative fosters partnerships between tourism SMEs and suppliers from other sectors. Examples include collaborations between a hotel and a supplier of refurbished mattresses, a restaurant and a supplier of food rejected by supermarkets, or an event organiser and a supplier of refurbished water bottles. These cross-domain partnerships are supported through a knowledge hub and business innovation advisors.

What findings did we uncover?

The project aims to develop a range of innovative partnerships that incorporate sustainable practices at various operational levels within tourism SMEs. By supporting 80 cross-domain collaborations, the project seeks to create practical examples of how green and circular business solutions can be integrated into tourism operations, thereby promoting broader adoption and replication of these practices.
