Wildlife Economy
For the Interreg project "Wildlife Economy: Nature as an Economic Asset," Breda University of Applied Sciences was tasked with developing a methodology to support the implementation of sustainable business models in the Regional Landscape Kempen and Maasland (RLKM). This project builds on concepts of regenerative tourism and the integration of business within local social and environmental systems.
What was the goal of this research?
The goal of this research was to create a framework that helps local stakeholders understand how the success of businesses is linked to the sustainable development of their region. Specifically, the research aimed to develop and propose a Business Purpose Canvas (BPC), which would serve as a tool for stakeholders to explore and implement sustainable business practices.
What method was employed?
The research team at Breda University of Applied Sciences developed the Business Purpose Canvas (BPC) as part of a broader manual. This manual outlines a comprehensive methodology to support the implementation of sustainable business models in RLKM. The BPC was designed to help local businesses and stakeholders explore the interconnectedness of business success and regional development, considering both social and environmental impacts.
What findings did we uncover?
The development of the Business Purpose Canvas (BPC) provided a valuable resource for entrepreneurs and stakeholders in RLKM. Key findings include:
- Embeddedness in Local Systems: The BPC emphasizes the importance of viewing businesses as embedded within local social and environmental systems, rather than separate entities.
- Support for Sustainable Practices: The methodology outlined in the manual supports businesses in transitioning towards more sustainable practices, aligning economic development with environmental and social sustainability.
- Regional Transformation: The research highlighted the potential for RLKM to transition from a predominantly agricultural area to a more diverse region offering sustainable accommodation and gastronomy options.
This project contributes to a growing body of resources aimed at helping businesses reconsider their roles within society and the environment, promoting a holistic approach to economic and regional development.
