Eco-lodges and biodiversity

The booking platform Natuurhuisje aims to enhance its positive impact on society and biodiversity by supporting eco-lodge owners in making informed decisions to increase their influence.

What was the goal of this research?

The goal of this research was to develop tools and strategies to help eco-lodge owners maximise their sustainability efforts and promote sustainable guest behaviour. By doing so, Natuurhuisje hopes to amplify its mission of safeguarding local biodiversity with every booking and enable customers to choose the most sustainable eco-lodges for their trips.

What method was employed?

Breda University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Natuurhuisje, NHLStenden, and CELTH, is developing a user-friendly self-assessment tool for eco-lodge owners. This tool is designed to help owners evaluate and compare their performance in sustainability, particularly for those who find participation in certification schemes like GreenKey and GreenGlobe impractical. The tool will also highlight the eco-lodges' positive contributions to local and global biodiversity.

What findings did we uncover?

The development of the self-assessment tool aims to facilitate eco-lodge owners in enhancing their sustainability practices. It is expected to provide valuable insights into how eco-lodges can better contribute to biodiversity and promote sustainable guest behaviour, such as energy use and waste collection. This project not only supports Natuurhuisje's mission but also offers students and researchers in the Hotel & Facility Management domains at Breda University of Applied Sciences an opportunity to contribute to sustainable hospitality practices.
