Enhancing Live Entertainment With Augmented Reality
The impact of technology on live entertainment has been profound, with advancements in special effects, promotion, and live streaming significantly altering the industry. The latest developments in immersive media, such as augmented reality (AR), offer new opportunities for creating more engaging and interactive experiences for audiences.
What was the goal of this research?
The goal of this research was to investigate how AR technology can be utilized in live performances and to understand its impact on the audience's experience. By enhancing original choreography with digital content, the project aimed to explore how AR could enrich live entertainment.
What method was employed?
Professional contemporary dancers Robin Kroes and Remy Tilburg collaborated with the research team to incorporate AR into their choreography. The project involved developing both background and foreground digital content and creating a system to align and synchronize this content with the physical stage and AR glasses for up to 20 participants. Four live performances were organised, allowing participants to experience the choreography with and without AR.
What findings did we uncover?
The research found that AR glasses can enhance live performances by adding an additional layer of experience. Although the technology is still in its early stages and factors such as performance conditions and comfort impact the overall experience, the project demonstrates that AR can provide significant benefits. Further research and future projects are expected to offer a deeper understanding of how technology can be seamlessly integrated into live entertainment.
