Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum 2024

On 27 and 28 May 2024, Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) and the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC) hosted the Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum. The objective of the event was to address the challenges of carbon emissions in the tourism industry. The event focused on the necessary transition and solutions to more sustainable tourism transportation modes like rail, coaches, and cycling.

More than 120 participants attended the event, mainly tour operators, DMOs, research organisations, transport operators and transport serviсes, public authorities and government.

There were project pitches about:

  • Climate risks for Dutch outbound tour operators
  • Developments and perspectives of the Dutch touring car sector
  • Modal shift, routing and nudging solutions in nature areas for sustainable tourism
  • Bed and bike

The workshops had the following topics:

  • Coach and the city: the position of coaches in transport and tourism
  • Planning for sustainable mobility at tourist destinations
  • Recreational cycling: opportunities and challenges 

It was a successful event: with interesting panels; deep -dives into the topics; a lot of interaction between people; as well as good interaction with the audience. The outcomes of the event were:

  • It clearly demonstrated the importance of and interest in sustainable tourism mobility across various sectors
  • New networks were established and valuable connections formed
  • Good ideas for education – to make sure that future professionals are able to take an active role in the sustainable tourism mobility transition we need to run
  • A deeper understanding into the research pathways necessary to bolster sustainable tourism mobility  
  • Extensive discussions took place about collaborative actions, essential policies, and the partnerships necessary to advance us towards achieving net-zero emissions in tourism travel 
  • Multiple participants requested to make the forum an annual initiative
