Studying with a support need

Breda University of Applied Sciences encourages you to bring out the best in yourself, even when carefree studying is not a given.

Need extra help?

A support need, illness or special situation that you face as a student in higher education can disrupt your studies, potentially causing delays.

Find out how BUas can help you.

Personal guidance

We would like to help you cope with these obstacles. We do this by means of certain arrangements, but also through extra personal guidance.

Support needs

Many students need extra support during their studies. This need may arise from conditions such as dyslexia or an autism spectrum disorder, a chronic illness, functional impairment*, mental health issues, pregnancy, young ageing, gender transition, or special family circumstances such as providing informal care. These situations create a demand for extra facilities or flexibility in education, which we refer to as support needs.

*By functional impairment, we mean a long-term to permanent condition that can lead to study delays. This includes all motor and sensory disabilities, as well as non-visible disabilities such as dyslexia, RSI, chronic fatigue, depression, and disorders on the autistic spectrum.

Because the impact of a support need on the progress of studies varies from person to person, we provide personal guidance. Together with the student counsellor and your study career coach or mentor, you create a study environment suited to your individual needs, enabling you to function optimally.

Intake interview

When you apply in Studielink, you can already indicate whether you have a support need. This is not compulsory, but we do advise you to make this known. That way, Breda University of Applied Sciences can provide you with specific, personalised guidance. You can also indicate via Studielink whether you would like an intake interview with the student counsellor. During this interview, the student counsellor will discuss with you which arrangements and provisions are important for you. The interview will also discuss possible financing via your PGB (Dutch abbreviation of ‘personal care budget’). Make sure that you can show a medical or dyslexia statement during this interview.

Personal guidance

  • The student counsellor The student counsellor specialises in legislation and regulations, for example on study financing, enrolment and termination of enrolment, binding study recommendations, and the legal position of students. But the student counsellor can also help you with personal problems. If you agree, the student counsellor will inform your study career coach or mentor of your situation.
  • Study coach or mentor Your study coach or mentor is your personal coach. They have insight into how you develop during your studies. They also know the options within the study programme, the requirements for entry-level professionals, and the opportunities within the professional field, sector or profession. Therefore, the coach or mentor is the right person to advise and guide you in making choices. If necessary, they can refer you to internal staff or services.

Financial support

As a student, you are entitled to student finance, depending on your age and nationality. If you receive student finance and you incur study delays, or if you have to terminate your studies early due to your disability, there are a number of financial schemes you can apply for.

Financial support from DUO

Financial support from Breda University of Applied Sciences

You may also submit a request for financial support from the Profiling Fund of Breda University of Applied Sciences. For more information about this option, please contact your student counsellor.
