SmartCulTour
The SmartCulTour project focuses on the role of cultural tourism as a driver of sustainable development. It aims to develop new definitions and frameworks, measure sustainability impacts, engage stakeholders through innovative methods, and trial interventions within community-led Living Labs.
What method was employed?
The research employed a multifaceted approach:
- Concepts: New definitions of (sustainable) cultural tourism, cultural tourism destinations, sustainable development, and resilience were developed to create a comprehensive understanding of the field.
- Measurement: A framework of sustainability and resilience indicators and a Decision Support System were identified and tested to measure and monitor the impacts of cultural tourism.
- Procedure: Innovative and creative tools for stakeholder engagement were tested and presented, including art-based methods, a serious game, and service design.
What findings did we uncover?
The research recognised state-of-the-art and innovative cultural tourism interventions through existing case studies and trialled specific interventions within six community-led Living Labs. These findings highlighted the effectiveness of using new definitions and frameworks, robust measurement systems, and creative engagement tools in promoting sustainable cultural tourism. The interventions demonstrated the potential for cultural tourism to drive sustainable development and enhance community resilience.
