Sharing Logistics in Warehousing

The sharing economy is a disruptive development that affects current businesses within the logistics sector and stimulates new initiatives.

What was the goal of this research?

For both shippers and logistics service providers, sharing economy principles could be an option to cope with trends such as sustainability issues, lack of space, staffing issues, e-commerce, and increasing requirements of customers. Existing examples of such initiatives include Compose and Stockspots. The goal of this research is to explore the potential of the sharing economy in logistics and understand its implications.

What method was employed?

At first glance, sharing has a resemblance with more traditional horizontal and vertical cooperation concepts. This research involved an initial exploration of literature to identify different ‘scenarios’ of sharing regarding warehousing. It aims to understand what each scenario entails, what feasible scenarios exist for companies, and whether companies are aware of possible opportunities.

What findings did we uncover?

This qualitative exploratory research is part of a larger project. It discovered that while sharing logistics has similarities with traditional cooperation concepts, it offers unique scenarios and opportunities. The research highlighted the need for companies to be more aware of these opportunities and consider the feasible scenarios for implementing sharing economy principles in their logistics operations.
